CBM’s Response to Covid-19

Did you know? If you give €250 or more to CBM in a calendar year, your donation could be worth 45% more.

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the lives of millions of families across the world. But with your support, we’ve been able to help in the response.

A year ago, experts across the world speculated how Covid-19 might ravage communities in impoverished places. Thankfully, so far those predictions have not come to fruition; communities in Kenya and Ethiopia, where we work, have shown remarkable resilience against the virus. However, strict lockdowns, rising food prices and the inability to work have left families vulnerable to hunger.

School closures have been devastating for children, with consequences for learning and safety: The most vulnerable may never return to the classroom and some are at risk of being forced into child marriage or child labour.

While the Covid-19 pandemic poses a serious threat to children, those with disabilities face multiple threats because of the challenges they already face in their daily lives. People with disabilities are often excluded from support during an emergency and are more likely to miss out on Covid-19 messaging and medical care as services are often less sensitive to people with disabilities’ needs.

You can ease this pain for children like Viola and get them the vital help they need by donating today

How we’ve responded, thanks to you

  • In Kenya and Ethiopia, we’re delivering food to thousands of the most in need, those out of work because of the pandemic and those unable to leave their homes due to government restrictions. We’re providing cash transfers to support families get back on their feet and helping people with disabilities access medical care.

  • CBM has rolled out public information campaigns, reaching 6,900 people in Kenya, so that every family can be empowered with the best guidance to protect their loved ones. In Kajiado County, we partnered with local radio and gave a platform to leading health experts to get the word out.

  • For the country’s poorest, our Community Health Workers took to the streets, tirelessly working to educate thousands of people on the dangers of Covid-19 and providing support to all that need it.

  • We’ve also worked with schools, providing education and psychosocial support to 750 pupils and 20 teachers in Kajiado County, Kenya.

Crises like the Covid-19 pandemic disrupt society and as a result of that disruption, hard won progress risks coming undone. The social toll of the pandemic is already being felt, and without action, this health crisis risks becoming a human rights crisis.

With your support, we’ve been there for some of the poorest communities in the world. And with your continuing generosity, we hope to do so much more. Please consider donating today
