A fire, and a burn that never healed
Aashika is seven years old. When she was three months old, a cooking fire spread to the hammock where she slept, and both of her small feet were badly burned. Her family live in a remote village in rural Nepal.
At the local hospital, her mother Sushila was told the burns would heal in a few weeks. They did not. Without access to the right care early on, Aashika's injuries worsened over the years, and the toes on her left foot were lost.

Walking became painful and dangerous. By the age of seven, Aashika was still making the long journey to school each day, often hurting her feet along the way. "I often get injured while walking," she says. "It hurts a lot."
For years, the specialist care she needed stayed out of reach. Her family did everything they could, but the treatment that could free her from pain was far from their village and hard to reach.
A mother's first journey out of the mountains
This summer, everything began to change. Sushila, who had never made a long journey on her own before, travelled across Nepal with her daughter to HRDC, a CBM partner hospital in Banepa.
There, surgeons operated on Aashika's left leg, with theatre nurse Rita Manandhar at her side. It was the first step on the road to walking without pain.
"Will I be able to walk by myself?"
Sitting at her bedside afterwards, Sushila whispered, "Yes, the operation was successful, and your wounds will heal gradually." Aashika soon asked the question closest to her heart: "Will I be able to walk by myself?"
Thanks to supporters like you, the answer is yes. A second operation and physiotherapy will complete her treatment, and Aashika is looking forward to going home to her sister and back to school.

How much does a cataract surgery cost?
On average, €150 can fund sight-saving surgery for one person. Even smaller gifts can help cover transport, follow-up care, and screening.
