International development organisation CBM has today highlighted the need for additional supports for Philippine Tropical Storm victims with disabilities which has affected close to 150,000 people and caused more than 800 deaths.
CBM Ireland National Director David McAllister said that CBM International has deployed a team to assist local programme partners in one of the most affected areas, Cagayan de Oro city.
Mr McAllister said: "Close to 35,000 people have found shelter in evacuation centres due to the terrible floods and landslides that washed houses away with more than a month's worth of rain fell in less than 12 hours. We have a team on the ground and they are reporting dire need of drinking water, food and basic items such as clothes, blankets or tarpaulins. Hygiene and sanitation are issues of much concern as well.
"CBM's evaluation mission is also going to assess the specific needs of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, who are especially at risk under such terrible circumstances. It is extremely important that specific medications for conditions such as epilepsy or hypertension are available or that mobility aids and other assistive devices (canes, crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, hearing aids, glasses, etc.) are distributed.
Mr McAllister concluded "Unfortunately even in emergency responses those with disabilities can be marginalised. Our team is working closely with our local partners and other aid workers to provide much needed support to the worst affected areas following the tropical storm."
