Hadiya, washing her eyes in a clean water well
CBM and our partners are working hard toward achieving our goal of eradicating Trachoma by 2020. With you on our side, we’re confident that we’ll make Trachoma a thing of the past.
We met Hadiya when our outreach team arrived in her village of Amhara in Ethiopia. Hadiya seemed incredibly shy. Our CBM Eye Care Nurse, Juster Kaburi, could tell straightaway that Hadiya was suffering from advanced stage Trachoma.
“Her eyelids had turned inwards and her eye lashes were constantly scraping across her exposed eyes. Every blink must have been agony. No wonder she wanted to hide away."

S.A.F.E Programme
With your support, our outreach teams travel from village to village, and region to region, in areas across North Africa where Trachoma is widespread. Using the internationally recognised S.A.F.E. programme, we protect communities from Trachoma.
We provide sight-saving surgery to children like Hadiya, who are in the advanced stage of Trachoma. For people who are in the early stages of infection we give them a five-year course of the antibiotic Zithromax, which kills the Trachoma infection and protects against re-infection for life.
And we educate people on how to prevent the spread of Trachoma, by teaching them simple face washing techniques. Lastly, we work with communities and partner organisations to identify environmental solutions, including digging wells and building latrines.
In 2012, with the support of generous people like you, and our partner organisations, we…
… built 4,462 latrines
… created 1,000 clean water sources (including digging wells)
… taught 835,685 people (including school children) proper face washing techniques
Now, CBM and our Nigerian partner VISION 2020 Support Program, have completed the Trachoma Mapping Project, where we’ve identified the areas where Trachoma is most prevalent. By doing this we’ll be able to target the places that are worst affected and act quickly.
“Active Trachoma” – the infectious form of the disease – is prevalent in 14 countries, and is most common in Sahel in West Africa, and the savannahs of East & Central Africa.
It’s estimated that Trachoma accounts for over €2 million in lost productivity worldwide every year, trapping the worst affected communities in a cycle of poverty and suffering.
