Typhoon Haiyan - Wilma's story

Wilma's children..

Wilma is a single mother of four children. For her whole life she has lived in a house on the shoreline of Concepcio. A house that had been in her family for generations.

Until the typhoon destroyed it.

Wilma’s eldest son, Cerilo, is blind, and also has mobility issues. When the typhoon struck, Wilma took her three youngest children to the evacuation centre, then returned home to carry Cerilo to her father’s farm, where she knew he would be safe.

Cerilo remembers waiting for the storm to pass: “I hid under the table with my grandfather. It went for four hours. I was very scared. I was shivering cold and could not stop crying. I just kept praying that it would be over.”

Fortunately, no one in the family was hurt. But now they are all homeless. They sleep in a tiny shack that’s normally a barn for animals and food storage. Cerilo dreams of going to school one day, but Wilma knows that without help, the future for her whole family is very bleak.
