World Sight Day 2009

Focus on Samburu

SamburuImagine a land where every day is a struggle simply to exist.

Where the burning sun bakes the earth beneath your feet as hard, and as dry, as stone. Where it never seems to rain. And the wind whips the dust from the ground into your eyes and those of every man, woman and child who walk upon it.

This land is Samburu, an arid region in Northern Kenya as large as Leinster. Home to a pastoralist people who have lived here for as long as the Celts have been in Ireland.

There isn’t a bush, shrub or tree here that doesn’t have thorns. And daily life seems to bear far more than its fair share of barbs too - malaria, trachoma, unsafe water, drought and famine…

But with the help of our wonderful donors, people just like you, CBM is working miracles. Here are just a few of the life-changing projects we’re running in this dry, dusty land:

SAFE from Trachoma
CBM field workers are saving thousands of people in Samburu from unnecessary blindness by teaching our SAFE Programme:

Surgery - eyelid rotation for severe cases.
Antibiotics - a €3 tube of Tetracycline ointment can stop Trachoma in its tracks.
Face-washing - to stop the spread of the infection.
Environmental improvements - clean water, safe latrines, and improved hygiene.

With your support, we can make the people of Samburu SAFE from the agony of Trachoma.

Cool, clear water
In Samburu, where the land has been baked dry by drought after drought in recent years… water is hope. Digging and clearing wells, looking after water sources, keeping them safe and clear of animal dung and infection - these concerns are a matter of life and death.

CBM is working hard to support and develop Water Management Projects throughout Samburu. So by supporting us today, you’ll be giving the people of Samburu life itself, and hope for the future.

Nets that save lives
For most of us in Ireland, mosquitoes are a nuisance we encounter only on foreign holidays. But in Samburu, they’re killers. During the rainy season Samburu is infested with malaria carrying mosquitoes. And the only way to keep them away is with nets. Simple, cheap, easy to distribute - these nets save lives. And your support for CBM will too.
