CBM Ireland wishes to thank everyone who attended our Photo Exhibition on 12th November in the Royal College of Physicians, Dublin.
CBM hosted a photographic exhibition to mark the first anniversary of Typhoon Haiyan. We were delighted to be joined by a visiting delegation of colleagues from our partner in the Philippines and members of CBM’s emergency response team.
A discussion, chaired by RTE’s Brian Dowling, discussed the progress that has been made in the year since the typhoon.
The delegation explained how the typhoon affected people with disabilities in evacuating and accessing relief.
Disability Inclusion in Emergency Response
CBM’s Barney McGlade, an Irishman working in the Philippines for over 20 years, said that the lack of consideration given to people with disabilities often meant that standard evacuation procedures are simply inaccessible to thousands of people. He also said that survivors with disabilities were also often excluded from basic emergency responses like food and health support.
CBM’s partner, Assocation of Disabled People Iloilo (ADPI), which is an organisation of people with disabilities, were able to reach people in the remote islands around Concepcion with food and emergency supplies within three days of the typhoon. CBM’s focus now is on long term relief, using the phrase “building back better” to ensure that people with disabilities are included in future services.
